Paul has talked about the character and outlook of a Christian in the world and in the home in the preceding parts of this letter. Now, he talks about the fight. For it is a fight to be pure in this fallen world with fallen people and a culture that is ever pulling on the Christian’s affections and desires. It is a fight to be loving husbands and submitting wives, to be obedient children and gracious fathers and mothers. It is a fight to not be taken in by the darkness, to ‘not become partners’ with ‘the sons of disobedience.’

But this fight is not to be fought unprepared, not by one charging naked into the fray.

Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. (Ephesians 6:11)
